smart #5 EHD Revealed as Brand’s First Plug-in Hybrid

smart claims an electric-only range of 250km and a total range of 1,600km.

smart has unveiled the #5 EHD, a plug-in hybrid version of its all-electric SUV, offering a claimed pure electric range of 250 km (155 miles) and a total range of 1,600 km (994 miles).

The model features a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine paired with an electric motor and a 41.46kWh battery, with a claimed fuel consumption of 4.4L/100km.

Priced between RMB 229,900 and RMB 368,000 (£23,750–£38,000 / $32,100–$51,400) for the BEV variant, the hybrid’s final cost remains unconfirmed but will likely come in between RMB 220,000 and RMB 240,000 (£22,700 – £24,750 / $30,700 – $33,500).

The #5 EHD retains the boxy design of its electric counterpart, with a roof-mounted lidar suggesting advanced driver-assistance capabilities.

The smart #5 EHD’s hybrid system combines a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine producing 120 kW (161hp) and an electric motor, likely the same 250kW motor used on the 400-volt RWD versions of the electric #5.

The lithium iron phosphate battery, supplied by CATL, enables a 250 km electric-only range under China’s CLTC cycle, according to smart, though an additional document on the MIIT site shows a 208km electric-only range, which could be the more accurate WLTC figure.

This positions the #5 EHD as a long-distance alternative to the existing BEV models, which currently offer up to 740 km (460 miles) of range.

Currently, the smart #5 is only available as a battery-electric vehicle, with rear- and all-wheel-drive configurations.

Externally, the #5 EHD closely resembles the BEV model, featuring the same angular styling, flush door handles, and full-width lighting signatures.

The roof-mounted lidar means the smart will get the same high-level ADAS system as the electric models and with it dual NVIDIA Orin-X chips and 28 to 36 smart sensors.

At 4,705 mm long, 1,920mm wide, and 1,710mm tall, with a 2,900 mm wheelbase, the #5 remains the largest vehicle in Smart’s line-up, and curiously is 5mm taller than the standard versions of the #5.

With a 2,190 kg kerb weight, the hybrid #5 is lighter than the electric #5s in part due to a considerably smaller battery.

smart’s sales in China declined by 19.37 percent in 2024, with just 33,427 units sold against a 50,000-unit target.

The #5 BEV has struggled since launch, but the introduction of the #5 EHD could help revive demand with larger SUVs tending to do better as hybrids than fully electric models.

No launch date has been announced but the model is expected to reach Chinese showrooms later this year, where it will compete against models like the Li Auto L7 and AITO M7.
