XPeng G7 Launched With L3-capable Tech and £20,000 Price

Model is marketed as being “the era-defining AI car”, boasting up to 2250 TOPS of processing power on the flagship Ultra edition.

XPeng has officially launched the G7 electric SUV, the most powerful production car ever in terms of processing power, with a starting price of just RMB195,800 (£20,000 / $27,300).

Available in three variants, the G7 is claimed as being the “world’s first L3-computing AI vehicle” courtesy of XPeng’s Turing AI chip, of which the Ultra edition of the car features no fewer than three.

Featuring XPeng’s “857” next-gen powertrain, indicating an 800-volt silicon-carbide platform, 5C fast charging, and up to 702km of range on the CLTC cycle, the G7 aims to appeal to families who need a lot of space but also want the latest technology.

It will compete against the likes of the recently-launched Xiaomi YU7, Tesla Model Y, and Zeekr 7X and sits between the G6 and G9 models in XPeng’s range.

With an aggressively low price point, the entry-level G7, known as the 602 Long Range Max, gets a smaller battery (size not yet disclosed) with a 602km CLTC range, but the same 5C charging and 12 minutes 10-80% charge time.

All models get the same drivetrain, a 218kW rear-mounted motor boasting 450Nm of torque, driving the G7 from 0 to 100kph in 6.6 seconds on the 602 Long Range Max, and 6.5 seconds on the 702 Ultra Long Range Max and Ultra models.

The mid-range 702 Ultra Long Range Max, which starts at RMB205,800 (£21,000 / $28,700), gets virtually all the same equipment as the 702 Ultra Long Range Ultra, with the only notable differences being the use of twin NVIDIA Orin-X chips to support the XNGP system, and 4G WiFi connectivity.

The 702 Ultra Long Range Ultra, an admittedly confusing name, instead gets triple XPeng Turing AI chips, one of which supports the infotainment, and two of which support the vision-based XNGP system that uses VLA, or the Vision-Language-Action model, as well as 5G cabin WiFi, for a starting price of RMB225,800 (£23,100 / $31,500).

XPeng’s marketing of the G7 as the world’s smartest, AI-powered vehicle, centres around its use of the self-developed Turing AI chips, which each equate to the three times the processing power of an NVIDIA Orin-X chip, and twice the processing power of Tesla’s latest HW4 chip.

In effect, the use of three of these chips future proofs the G7 for years to come, giving the G7 unprecedented data processing capability, such that it uses the VLA model of essentially processing what the car is seeing into words, and then converting that into action.

This is all completed on the car itself, meaning the data doesn’t have to connect to an outside source, and XPeng says it will transform the car from merely a receiver of inputs via buttons and voice, to a proactive thinking vehicle and companion that comes to understand its users.

Meanwhile, the car can learn as it goes, which XPeng claims paves the way for future level-4 and even level-5 autonomy, currently only available to certified robotaxi providers.

Elsewhere, the G7 gets a choice of six exterior colours and four interior colours, which we covered in our full preview of the G7 here, with the interiors featuring genuine wood and Nappa leather.

XPeng claims the G7 is the most space efficient car in its class, with an 819-litre boot that can expand to 2,277-litres with the seats folded down.

There’s also a 42-litre washable frunk, 39 storage solutions around the cabin, and a 5.9-litre glovebox that can be password-protected.

In the front, a 15.6-inch touchscreen sits in the centre of the dashboard, while in the rear there’s an 8-inch rear touchscreen for passenger entertainment, and the driver gets the new 87-inch AR-HUD developed together with Huawei.

The G7 also gets four seats with heating, ventilation, and massaging functions, as well as electronic adjustment, as well as a 20-speaker sound system and a triple-scent cabin fragrance system.

On the chassis front, XPeng claims the G7 is an AI-chassis which can learn new functions in as little as 21 days, meaning it’s not just the cabin software that can improve but the car itself.

Each model gets intelligent variable damping shock absorbers, and front double-wishbone and rear five-link suspension.

It also gets something XPeng calls the Tai Chi hydraulic bushing matrix. That’s a translation so we’re not 100 percent certain what that means but it’s believed to be part of the adaptability of the overall chassis.

On the safety front, the G7 boasts an expected 5-star C-NCAP rating, the industry’s highest AEB braking speed (tested to 130kph), and a chassis with a torsional stiffness of 41,600Nm/deg, an astonishingly high number from experience, and one that can sustain a roof pressure of up to 10-tonnes.

As ever, the G7 arrives with a plethora of launch benefits for customers buying the car by July 31st, including free upgrades to Nappa leather seating, and the four-door soft close package.

They also get 1-year of XPILOT’s safety service, which is a piece of mind service whereby XPeng will compensate owners for any failure of the XNGP system.

Early buyers can also choose from an RMB5,000 accessory fund, or get 2-years 0% financing, and buyers of the Ultra will get 50,000 points for the XPeng store.

Existing XPeng owners can also benefit from RMB20,000 in loyalty benefits.
