Nio Unveils Comprehensive Update for ET5 and ET5 Touring Enhanced range, refined design, and advanced technology mark the 2025 refresh

Nio has introduced a significant update to its ET5 sedan and ET5 Touring models, bringing over 500 individual improvements across design, comfort, technology, and performance.

The updated lineup maintains its competitive pricing structure, with the standard 75 kWh battery model starting at 298,000 yuan (around £30,750 / $41,100), and the battery−as−a−service (BaaS) model reducing the purchase price to 228,000 yuan (about £23,500 / $31,700), with monthly battery subscription fees beginning at 728 yuan (£75 / $100).

The most notable advancement comes with the optional 150 kWh semi-solid-state battery pack, which enables an impressive CLTC-rated range of up to 1,055 kilometers – setting a new benchmark in the premium electric vehicle segment.

The 2025 ET5 and ET5 Touring receive subtle but impactful exterior updates, with both featuring redesigned front-end styling with advanced ADB (Adaptive Driving Beam) intelligent multi-beam headlights that provide superior nighttime visibility while minimising glare for other road users.

The signature “double-dash” LED daytime running lights have been re-engineered with a more precise light signature, while the headlight units have been widened and made more rectangular to give a greater impression of solidity at the front.

Colour options have been expanded, with the ET5 sedan gaining an exclusive Glow shade, a kind metallic lilac, while the ET5 Touring adds a New Moon Silver variant.

Both body styles now feature high-gloss black trim elements on the bumpers, side skirts, and rear diffuser, creating a more cohesive and premium appearance, and new 20-inch five-spoke alloy wheels incorporate aerodynamic inserts that reduce drag while maintaining the sporty character of Nio’s design language.

Inside the cabin, Nio has implemented numerous improvements focused on enhancing the user experience, including the introduction of a landscape format 15.6-inch AMOLED touchscreen display, as well as a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster and a 50-inch augmented reality head-up display that projects critical information directly into the driver’s field of vision.

A digital rearview mirror improves rearward visibility. which addresses the issue with the previous variant of a super-slim, letterbox style rear window that rendered the rearview mirror all but useless.

Three new interior colour themes – Purple, Pearl, and Gray – offer customers greater personalisation options, and Nio’s engineers have completely redesigned the seating system, implementing an innovative 11-layer comfort structure that includes two-piece seat cushions and high-resilience foam for improved long-distance comfort.

Rear seat occupants benefit from 75mm of additional thigh support, while the entire cabin enjoys improved acoustic insulation. The vehicles now feature infrared-resistant laminated glass for the side windows and a dual-silver-coated panoramic roof that blocks up to 99% of infrared radiation.

Both models also benefit from Nio’s new in-house developed NX9031 chip, which delivers computing power equivalent to four industry-leading processors working in tandem.

This formidable hardware supports a comprehensive sensor suite comprising 29 individual components, including a cutting-edge 300-line equivalent LiDAR unit and 4D imaging radar with enhanced object recognition capabilities.

The system enables full-domain lane-level navigation and utilises Nio’s proprietary World Model for predicting driving behaviour and advanced scene understanding.

A major over-the-air update scheduled for late June will activate comprehensive guided pilot assistance features, further enhancing the vehicles’ autonomous driving capabilities.

The intelligent cockpit system supports seamless connectivity and integrates with Nio’s growing ecosystem of services and charging infrastructure.

The ET5 range is now dual-motor all-wheel-drive only, with a combined 360kW of power (150 kW front, 210 kW at the rear) and 700 Nm of torque.

Battery options include the standard 75 kWh pack, which provides up to 585 km (ET5) or 550 km (ET5 Touring) of range on the CLTC cycle, a 100 kWh extended-range battery for 740km (ET5T) or 710km (ET5), and the flagship 150kWh semi-solid state battery, offering 1055km (ET5) or 1010km (ET5T) of range.

The ET5 Touring distinguishes itself with practical enhancements including a 1,400 kg towing capacity (with 75 kg tongue weight) and exclusive comfort features.

These include 14-way power-adjustable front seats with heating, ventilation, and massage functions, a 23-speaker 7.1.4 surround sound system, dual 50W wireless charging pads, and an intelligent dimmable panoramic roof that automatically adjusts tint based on sunlight conditions.

While priced slightly above direct competitors like the Tesla Model 3 and Zeekr 007, Nio’s emphasis on premium materials, cutting-edge technology, and flexible ownership options appears to resonate with customers, with sales data from April 2025 showing the wagon outselling the saloon by 3:1, with 6,015 units sold versus 2,015 for the saloon.

The comprehensive update solidifies Nio’s position in the premium electric vehicle market, offering customers an appealing combination of extended range, advanced technology, and thoughtful design improvements.

With production already underway, deliveries of the updated ET5 and ET5 Touring are expected to begin across China in the coming weeks, followed by European markets later this quarter.
