Mid-size SUV should sit between G6 and G9 in XPeng’s line-up and will target the Zeekr 7X and Tesla Model Y.
XPeng has released official photos of a new mid-size SUV called the G7 that shares similar design cues to the recently launched P7+ saloon.
No official details have been released with the images but it’s expected that the car may be included in the upcoming MIIT filings that often precede an official launch and those will give us a clearer picture.
For now, we can assume that the G7 will be based on the same 800-volt platform as the P7+ and share similar drivetrain options, suggesting rear-drive-only drivetrains offering 180kW or 230kW of power with both boasting 450Nm of torque.
Battery sizes too should match the P7+, with 60.7kWh and 76.3kWh LFP options available, offering around 615km (382 miles) to 725km (450 miles) of range on the CLTC cycle.
Like the P7+, the G7 will offer XPeng’s Hawk-eye vision-based ADAS system which goes without the lidars that previous XPeng models used.
Overall, the G7 looks somewhat sharper than the curvier, more egg-shaped G6, with the pointy, aerodynamic face of the P7+ and the longstanding X-face full-width daytime running light across the front.
Surface treatment along the side remains similar to the G6 with soft shoulders and falling sculpting above a sharper rising crease at the bottom, and pop-out door handles.
But where the G7 differs most is at the rear, where the wraparound angular lightbar from the P7+ is grafted onto the back, offering a more chiselled look than the rounded tail of the G6 which suffered from poor rearward visibility from a letterbox rear window.
Neat details include a sharp rear spoiler, plus-shaped, two-tone alloys, and the same wing mirror mountings as the P7+ which feature a turquoise light that comes on when in autonomous driving mode.
Without interior images we’ll have to take guidance from the P7+ interior, which features a single central screen and no head-up display. The floating central screen can just about be seen on the images provided.
Likely rivals will be the Zeekr 7X and Tesla Model Y, with the G7 expected to be closer to the former in size, gaining a few extra centimetres over the G6 to major on space and value like the P7+.
With the base level P7+ starting at just RMB 186,800 (£20,700 / $25,500), the G7 is likely to hit the market at just under RMB 200,000, undercutting the base 7X by around RMB 30,000.
