Guangzhou-based EV maker looks to have successive big sellers on its hands as P7+ lights up the sales charts.
XPeng officially opened the order books for their P7+ saloon-cum-hatchback this week, taking a staggering 31,528 firm orders in the space of around four hours.
The model, which we recently reviewed (see end of article), turned out to be an even bigger opening day success than the cheaper MONA 03 which launched back in August, and is one of the fastest-selling cars in Chinese history after the Xiaomi SU7.
Sales were no doubt boosted by a lower than expected price tag. Initial communications had the base version starting at RMB 209,800 but XPeng surprised everyone with a starting price more than 10% lower at RMB 186,800 for the Long Range Max version.
In fact the only edition over the original starting price is the top-spec Limited Edition Max, which is limited to 500 units and comes with 20-inch wheels and the larger 76.3kWh LFP battery. The middle version is the Ultra Long Range Max which costs RMB 198,800.
The P7+ is the first XPeng model to come with the AI Hawkeye ADAS system, which does without lidar in favour of high-resolution lofic cameras and the usual array of radars and sensors.
It comes with a single motor on the rear axle, producing either 180kW or 230kW of power, and 450Nm or torque on each. Batteries are either 60.7kWh or 76.3kWh LFP units, with the smaller rated for 602km of range and 710km of range, though both will jump to 615km and 725km with upcoming OTA updates. Limited Edition versions get a range of 685km, rising to 700km with the update.
This gives the P7+ energy efficiency of 10km per kWh, in part thanks to an upgraded thermal management system, weight savings, and an aerodynamic body with a drag coefficient of just 0.206Cd.
The more powerful drivetrain enables a 0-100kph sprint of 5.9 seconds, while the less powerful version takes 6.9 seconds, while braking distance in the other direction is completed in 35 metres.
Inside, the P7+ gains an upgraded version of XPeng’s X-GPT model, which enables users to have natural voice interactions with the car to complete a wide variety of operations and offer ChatGPT-like support on things as diverse as local restaurants, sightseeing, general knowledge, and more.
The cockpit, which consists of three screens, a 10.25-inch digital instrument display, a 15.6-inch central screen, and an 8-inch screen for rear occupants, is powered by the latest Snapdragon 8295P chip.
Top editions get heated, ventilated, and massaging seats in the front and the rear, while rear seats get electric backrest angle adjustment of 10-degrees. There’s also a fold-down tray on the back of the front passenger seat.
The major selling point of the P7+, however, is its space. The hatchback boot can accommodate up to 725-litres, and with the rear seats folded down this figure increases to 2,221-litres, making the P7+ something XPeng call a “space monster”.
